TL;DR — In 60 seconds

What is gift card scamming? A form of fraud where criminals pressure victims to pay with gift cards (Apple, Google Play, Bol, Amazon), after which the codes are redeemed within minutes and the money disappears irrevocably.

The golden rule: No legitimate organisation — tax authority, police, your bank, your employer, your utility company — ever asks for payment in gift cards. Period.

Losses in the Netherlands: According to the Fraudehelpdesk, gift card fraud increased by more than 40% in 2025 compared to 2023.

If you have become a victim: Call the card issuer immediately (Apple, Google, Amazon), register it with the Fraudehelpdesk (0800-2112) and file a report with the police within 48 hours.

Last month, a story was shared on the Fraudehelpdesk forum where a 67-year-old father from Friesland lost €4,200 in Apple gift card codes in a single evening. The caller posed as a "Microsoft Support" employee. By the time his daughter found out, all codes had been redeemed.

This kind of story is not rare. According to the Netherlands Authority for Consumers and Markets (ACM), gift card scamming has now become the most reported payment method in telephone fraud in the Netherlands.

Have you ever bought, received or sold a gift card? Then this guide is for you. We cover:

  • The 7 most common gift card scams in 2026

  • How to spot a scammer before you lose your money

  • What you should and should not do if you are already a victim

  • How retailers, platforms and the government are fighting back

💡 Why Giffy is writing this

At Giffy, we build gift card infrastructure for businesses that want to distribute payouts securely to employees, customers and partners. We see fraud patterns passing by every day and know exactly how scammers operate. This guide is our way of giving that knowledge back to the public.

Why scammers love gift cards

Three reasons:

  1. Untraceable. Once a code is redeemed, the money is practically cash.

  2. Lighting fast. A criminal can drain a card within 60 seconds.

  3. Irreversible. Unlike credit cards, gift cards do not have a chargeback mechanism.

This combination — instant, anonymous, irreversible — explains why gift cards have displaced bank transfers as the preferred method of fraud.

The 7 most common gift card scams in 2026

1. The Tax Authority impersonation

You get a phone call: "This is the Tax Authority. You have an outstanding tax debt. Pay immediately in Apple gift cards or we will dispatch the bailiff."

Reality check: The Tax Authority never calls to demand immediate payment. Letters are always sent in writing, with DigiD-verifiable correspondence. A real Tax Authority employee will never ask you for gift cards.

2. The Microsoft / Tech Support scam

A pop-up appears on your computer warning you of "viruses". You call the number. A "technician" takes remote control of your computer, "finds" malware, and demands payment in gift cards.

Reality check: Microsoft, Apple and Google never call you unsolicited about computer issues. They also do not accept gift cards as a payment method.

3. The CEO / Boss scam

You receive an email or WhatsApp from your "manager": quickly buy gift cards for a customer surprise or team outing, I will reimburse it later.

Reality check: Walk over to your manager's desk or call their known internal number. Never respond directly to the email. For Dutch SMEs, this is now the most reported form of CEO fraud.

4. The Romance fraud

You meet someone online. After weeks of contact, this person asks for "a little help" — usually in gift cards because "the bank is being difficult".

Reality check: Anyone you have never met in person who asks for gift cards is executing a script. This is one of the most emotionally devastating scams because the loss is not just financial.

5. The Utility Company scam

A caller poses as an employee of Vattenfall, Eneco or Liander. Your bill is outstanding. Pay within the hour in gift cards, or your power will be cut off.

Reality check: Energy suppliers do not accept gift cards. They send reminders, offer payment arrangements and do not disconnect assistance within an hour.

6. The Contest / Lottery scam

You have won! Just pay the "processing fees" or "tax" in gift cards to claim your prize.

Reality check: You cannot win a lottery you did not enter. You do not pay prize tax in advance with gift cards. That's that.

7. The Marktplaats / Vinted scam

You sell something on Marktplaats or Vinted. The buyer offers to pay in gift cards. Or they "make a mistake" and transfer too much, asking if you can refund the difference in gift cards.

Reality check: Real buyers use Tikkie, iDEAL or platform payments. If someone insists on gift cards in a marketplace transaction: stop immediately.

The universal red flags

All gift card scams have the same fingerprints:

  • Urgency. "You must pay within an hour or [something terrible] will happen."

  • Authority. The caller claims to represent a powerful organisation (Tax Authority, police, your employer).

  • Isolation. "Do not tell your family — this is confidential."

  • Specific brands. Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Bol, Steam — these are the most highly targeted brands because they are easily redeemable internationally.

  • No alternatives. They refuse credit card, iDEAL or other traceable methods.

If you recognise two or more of these signals in the same conversation: you are being scammed. Hang up. Walk away. Delete the message.

How to spot a tampered gift card in the shop

Physical card fraud is still a thing in 2026. Criminals visit stores, photograph or skim the PIN through the packaging, and wait for someone to buy and load that specific card.

Before you buy:

  • Check the packaging for tears, glue residue or poor alignment

  • Ensure the PIN scratch-off panel is completely intact

  • Inspect the barcode — there should not be a sticker covering the original

  • Take a card from the back of the rack, not the front

  • Keep your receipt until the card is completely used

What to do if you have been scammed

The first 48 hours are crucial. Here is the recovery protocol:

1. Do not redeem any remaining balance. Stop using the card immediately.

2. Call the card issuer. Apple, Google, Amazon, Bol — they all have fraud reporting lines. If the codes have not been redeemed yet, they can sometimes freeze the balance.

3. Save everything. Original card, receipt, screenshots of messages, phone number of the scammer, any redemption attempts.

4. Report in this order:

  • The card issuer (highest recovery rate)

  • Fraudehelpdesk via 0800-2112 or fraudehelpdesk.nl

  • Police: report via politie.nl or local police station (you will need a police report number)

  • Centraal Meldpunt Identiteitsfraude (CMI) if your personal data has been misused

  • ACM ConsuWijzer (consuwijzer.nl) for consumer complaints

5. Inform your bank if you paid for the card by debit/credit card. In rare cases, the original transaction can be disputed.

6. Never pay anyone who promises to "recover" your money. Recovery scams target previous victims. No legitimate service guarantees recovery of gift card fraud for a fee.

How retailers and the government are fighting back

The good news: 2026 is the first year showing real progress.

  • Major Dutch retailers (Albert Heijn, Bruna, Primera) are training cashiers to ask questions during large gift card purchases. Some stores apply limits of €500 per transaction without ID.

  • Apple, Google and Amazon are using AI-driven redemption pattern detection that flags suspicious behavior in real-time.

  • The Fraudehelpdesk was expanded in 2025 with a dedicated team for gift card fraud.

  • Banks (ING, ABN AMRO, Rabobank) flag large gift card purchases on debit/credit cards and pause transactions for verification.

It is not enough. But it is a start.

The bigger context — secure payments matter

At Giffy, we build the next generation of gift card infrastructure: real-time fraud detection, secure redemption flows, verified retailer integrations. For companies rewarding employees or surprising customers, this means: no wasted budget on stolen or scammed cards.

The fraud problem in this market is not unsolvable — it is a problem of outdated infrastructure, weak verification and slow industry response. But until the whole sector catches up, your best defense remains awareness.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I get my money back after a gift card scam?

Partial recovery is possible if you act within 24-48 hours and the codes have not been redeemed yet. First, call the card issuer. After 72 hours, recovery options drop sharply.

Is it safe to buy gift cards online?

From the official website of the retailer (apple.com, bol.com, amazon.nl) or a verified secondary platform: yes. From random third-party sellers with deep discounts: no. If an offer seems too good to be true, the card is likely stolen or empty.

Which gift cards do scammers ask for most often?

Apple, Google Play, Amazon, Steam, Bol, and Vanilla Visa. These have the broadest international redemption options, which makes them appealing to fraudsters.

Should I ever pay someone in gift cards?

For personal gifts to people you trust: yes. For any payment, transaction, fine or business expense: never.

How do I know if a received gift card is real?

Check the balance on the issuer's official website (type the URL manually — do not click on a link). If the balance is zero or the card is invalid: contact the sender immediately.

What is the penalty for gift card fraud in the Netherlands?

Under Dutch law, gift card fraud falls under scamming (Art. 326 of the Criminal Code), carrying a maximum sentence of 4 years in prison. For large-scale operations, this can extend to 6 years under money laundering articles.

Who is responsible if I bought a tampered card at a store?

In the Netherlands, under the law of "non-conformity": if the product does not meet what you could reasonably expect, the retailer is liable. Keep your receipt and report it immediately.
